A fitness tracker watch has arrived in Dubai and will be offered to all residents who sign up for the city’s first indoor fitness club.
The Fitbit Charge HR watch is designed to track a person’s heart rate and monitor fitness activities at a distance.
It is a wearable fitness tracker that can be worn at home or at a gym.
It is the first of its kind in the Middle East.
Fitness clubs have been introduced in the UAE for more than a decade but until now they were restricted to men only.
“We hope the Fitbit will become the next fitness app in the country, it is the most popular among men,” a Fitbits spokesman told Reuters news agency.
An app that will allow residents to track their steps, weight, and temperature will be launched on March 11.
In recent years, Dubai has become a hotbed for new fitness clubs.
Men, women and children will be able to join fitness clubs with a fee of about $100 (£75) per month.
At the moment, there are about 3,000 fitness clubs in the capital, the spokesman said.
According to the Dubai Sports Association, about 50% of Emiratis are overweight.
The figure for men is around 35%.
The spokesman said the government will invest $1.2bn into the fitness club sector.
