The space that once served meals is becoming a place to get in some miles — one of the major changes planned for Fox Ridge Golf Course after GreatLIFE Golf and Fitness bought the business in January.
Fox Ridge, a nine-hole public golf course located at 800 S. Kansas Ave., was founded in 1903.
“This course used to be really nice, back in the day,” said manager Alan Joyal.
By improving the quality of the course, GreatLIFE hopes to bring in families who want to learn healthy lifestyles through golf.
“GreatLIFE’s business model is focused on family, fitness and golf,” Joyal said.
That mission is one of the factors behind the decision to turn the course’s former restaurant into a fitness facility. Containing treadmills, dumbbells and other workout equipment, the fitness facility is scheduled to open sometime this fall.
“They’ve made a lot of changes so far, and they plan to make even more,” said Fox Ridge employee Carlos Saenz.
One project has risen to the top of the list for the maintenance staff at the golf course.
“We’re going to fix the cart paths, because they’re pretty bad,” Joyal said.
One of the area’s oldest golf courses, Fox Ridge is a popular place for area high school golf teams to practice.
“It’s reasonably priced, it’s not a very long course and we’re never packed full with tournaments,” Joyal said.
Joyal said he wants Fox Ridge to be a welcoming place for amateur golfers and families to play, noting several golf clinics will be offered this summer.
One of the features of Fox Ridge is its shorter course, which is less intimidating for new players.
“It’s a relaxed, family atmosphere,” Saenz said. “There’s no pressure.”
Fox Ridge also has a putting green and a driving range.
“There’s no charge for putting on the practice green; they do charge for the driving range,” Saenz said.
Purchasing an individual or family membership at Fox Ridge gives people the chance to take advantage of reciprocal playing opportunities in other GreatLIFE facilities. The company owns more than 70 facilities across the Midwest.
“With a membership here, you can play at Prairie Trails in El Dorado and at Augusta Country Club for free,” Joyal said. “You also get access to the fitness facility here and at the other facilities as well.”
Staying at home has its perks, as well.
“I enjoy the people who come out. After you’re here for so long, you know them all by name,” Saenz said.
